The age old saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”, is one I ignore every time I scan the shelves for a new book to read. I know that’s awful but if a book doesn’t have a professional or interesting looking cover, then I’m not going to be curious enough to read the synopsis on the back.
When you’re writing a book the cover may be the last thing you think about but it needs to move up in priority. Think about the essence of your story. Consider the highlights and why you want it to attract readers. I broke the rule of self-publishing and created my own, but I’ve also been trained in creating images for my degree in public relations. I researched YA fantasy book covers and I knew I could create a cover that would stand out but blend in with its genre.
I researched YA Fantasy covers, traditionally published and indie authors, and I chose to design my own cover. BUT! I only chose to do this because I was trained in marketing and public relations. I knew how to use Indesign and Photoshop (though I ended up using Canva). If you haven’t been trained in graphic design I don’t recommend you try to design your own cover. Check Fiverr for graphic designers who can do this step for you. There are some great quality designers for hire, you just have to find the one who fits your idea of what you want for your book.
A cover is like the format and editing of your book- you don’t want to only give half your best. Give 100% so you can feel great about what you put out on the shelf. Because almost every reader will judge a book by its cover.
